Shahad Abhishek, also known as Abhishek with cows milk, is a revered ritual in which Lord Shiva in his Rudra avatar is worshiped. During this ceremony, a Shivalinga is bathed with milk from a brass vessel called ‘Shringi’, continuously poured over the deity while chanting the Vedic mantra Rudra Sukta, also known as Rudri Paath.
This sacred practice is conducted to invoke the blessings of Lord Rudra, the fierce aspect of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be particularly effective in overcoming obstacles in one’s life. Notably, Lord Ram himself performed Rudrabhishek in Rameshwaram to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings before engaging in battle with Ravan.
The Shahad Abhishek ceremony begins with the invocation of Lord Rudra, followed by the chanting of the Rudra Sukta Mantra, culminating in the Rudrabhishek ritual.
The Rudrabhishek puja holds several significant benefits:
  • 1. Mitigation of Malefic Effects: Rudrabhishek helps minimize the malefic effects of Punarvasu, Pushya, and Ashlesha Nakshatras, transforming them into beneficial influences.
  • 2. Prevention of Untimely Incidents: This puja is believed to prevent untimely incidents and accidents, ensuring the well-being and sound health, both physically and mentally, of the devotee.
  • 3. Removal of Karmic Doshas: Rudrabhishek aids in eliminating karmic doshas, protecting the devotee from evil eye and negative energies.
  • 4. Family Harmony and Prosperity: By invoking Lord Rudra’s blessings, Rudrabhishek bestows peace, harmony, and prosperity upon the devotee’s family.
