Performing Dahi Abhishek, or Abhishek with yogurt, is a revered form of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Rudra avatar. During this ritual, a Shivalinga is bathed with yogurt, continuously poured over the deity, accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras such as the Rudra Sukta, also known as Rudri Paath.
Dahi Abhishek is performed with the intention of invoking the blessings of Lord Rudra, the fierce aspect of Lord Shiva. This puja is believed to be highly effective in overcoming obstacles in life, as exemplified by Lord Ram’s performance of Rudrabhishek in Rameshwaram before his battle with Ravan.
The benefits of Rudrabhishek puja are manifold:
1. Mitigation of Malefic Effects: Rudrabhishek minimizes the malefic effects of Punarvasu, Pushya, and Ashlesha Nakshatras, transforming them into beneficial influences.
2. Prevention of Untimely Incidents: This puja is believed to prevent untimely incidents and accidents, ensuring sound physical and mental health for the devotee.
3. Removal of Karmic Doshas: Rudrabhishek eliminates karmic doshas and protects the devotee from the effects of the evil eye and negative energies.
4. Family Harmony and Prosperity: By invoking Lord Rudra’s blessings, Rudrabhishek bestows peace, harmony, and prosperity upon the devotee’s family.
The Rudri Paath, comprising eight chapters of Vedic shlokas and mantras collectively known as Rudrashtdhyayi, is an integral part of Rudrabhishek. The Avriti rituals associated with Rudrabhishek involve varying numbers of recitations, each adding layers of devotion and intensity to the worship, ultimately culminating in the profound Maha Rudra ceremony.
