History of Baidyanath Nagri Deoghar

The history of the establishment of this linga is that once the demon king Ravana went to the Himalayas and did severe penance for the happiness of Shiva and started cutting his heads and offering them on the Shivling. After offering nine heads one by one, the tenth head was also about to be cut off when Shiva appeared pleased. They beheaded his ten heads and asked him to ask for a boon. Ravana went to Lanka and asked for permission to take him to establish that linga. Shiva gave the permission, but gave it with the warning that if he puts it on the earth on the way, then he will become immovable there. Eventually that happened. Ravana walked with Shivling, but when he came to a funeral pyre on the way, he needed a brief retirement. Ravana handed over that linga to an Ahir whose name was Baijnath Bhil, and went to retire. Here those Ahir Bhils felt the Jyotirlinga very heavy and placed them on the ground. What was it then, on his return, Ravana could not uproot it even after applying full power and in despair, he went to Lanka after sticking his thumb on the idol. Here Brahma, Vishnu etc. Gods came and worshiped that Shivling. As soon as Shiva appeared, all the deities replaced the Shivling at the same place and went back to heaven, praising Shiva. According to popular belief and folk belief, this Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is going to give desired results.
