Performing Ganga Jal Abhishek, or Rudrabhishek with Ganga Jal, is a profound form of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Rudra avatar. During this ritual, Ganga Jal, the sacred waters of the river Ganga, are used to bathe the Shivalinga in a continuous stream from a brass vessel called ‘Shringi’. This act is accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras, including the powerful Rudra Sukta or Rudri Paath.
Ganga Jal Abhishek puja is performed with the intention of invoking the blessings of Lord Rudra, the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be highly effective in overcoming obstacles in life, as exemplified by Lord Ram’s performance of Rudrabhishek in Rameshwaram before his battle with Ravan.

The Rudri Paath, comprising eight chapters of Vedic shlokas and mantras known as Rudrashtdhyayi, is an integral part of Rudrabhishek. The Avriti rituals associated with Rudrabhishek involve varying numbers of recitations, each adding layers of devotion and intensity to the worship:
- – Basic Abhishek: One or five Avritis are performed, typically by one or five Shastris simultaneously.
- – Rudra Abhishek: Eleven Avritis are performed, with one Avriti dedicated to each of the eleven Rudras, often conducted by eleven Shastris simultaneously.
- – Laghu Rudra: Eleven sets of eleven Avritis are performed over 6 to 11 days by eleven Shastris or Purohits.
- – Maha Rudra: Eleven sets of eleven sets of eleven Avritis, equivalent to eleven Laghu Rudra rituals, are performed for Maha Rudra, representing the pinnacle of worship and auspiciousness.
